NAIT’s technical training and applied education is designed to meet the demands of Alberta's industries – graduates have the knowledge and skills employers want. They leave NAIT confident, prepared and in demand.

Since its establishment in 1960, NAIT has built a reputation for providing outstanding applied education with a human touch. A number of unique programs and strong industry ties make NAIT stand out:

    * Two unique baccalaureate programs developed to respond to industry’s needs.

    * Twelve apprenticeship programs exclusive to NAIT in Alberta.

    * The most nationally accredited engineering and applied science programs in Canada.

In addition, program advisory committees advise NAIT on industry trends and the skills graduates should possess.

Applied Research and Innovation Services

NAIT’s focus on real-world applications and industry-driven programming has prepared the institute to make a significant contribution to Canada’s growing reputation in – and need for – application based research. Through novaNAIT, NAIT has placed an emphasis on and resources toward facilitating applied research and supporting entrepreneurship and enterprise development

NAIT pursues applied research opportunities with organizations that seek to develop new technologies and processes and as a result, enhances the knowledge and skills of its own faculty and students. novaNAIT’s enabling programming including its product development and business incubator programming are designed to enable local SME’s to access NAIT’s applied research capacity for accelerating their growth.

Applied Research Chairs at NAIT anchor its applied research priority areas. These include the Ledcor Group Applied Research Chair in Oil Sands Environmental Sustainabilitywhich leads NAIT’s Green Chemistry and Engineering programming and the JR Shaw Applied Research Chair in Sustainable Economic Development which leads sustainable research priorities within NAIT’s business school. NAIT also has a focus on Boreal Reclamation, Robotics and Automation, Health Simulation and Gaming, Green Roof Technology, Nanotechnology, Occupational Fitness and Watershed Habitat Management and Improvement.

International Activities and International Educational Partnerships

For more than 40 years, NAIT has partnered with industries in over 60 countries. In 2009/10, NAIT Corporate and International Training (CIT) delivered 135 customized training projects in Cuba, Libya, China, the United States and Canada. International training exports the institute’s world-class curriculum, and in developing countries, helps build a skilled workforce capable of sustaining economic growth. By drawing on NAIT’s more than 200 programs, Corporate and International Training is able to customize and deliver training for industries, businesses, and governments around the world.

In addition to its corporate training initiatives, NAIT has established linkage programs including one with the Hei Long Jiang Institute of Science and Technology in China to deliver the Computer Systems Technology program. A partnership with the Tianjin Polytechnic University was also established to provide Chinese students the opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Applied Business Administration – Accounting program.
