BURNABY, BC:  The Board of Governors of the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) is pleased to announce the re-appointment of Dr. Don Wright to a second term as President.

Dr. Wright joined BCIT in March of 2008 after a career spanning the academic, governmental, and private sectors.

“Dr. Wright has had an impressive first term, and there is strong support for his continued leadership,” says Michael McPhie, Chair of the Board of Governors at BCIT. “The Board believes that his stewardship and vision will be extremely valuable as BCIT looks to its 50th year in 2014 and beyond.”

In Dr. Wright’s first term, BCIT developed a new strategic vision and plan, and stabilized its finances in challenging economic times. The demand for its educational programming has continued to grow, and it has become a more significant provider of applied research, delivering solutions to BC businesses.

“Over the past four years it has been a privilege to be part of an Institute that is integral to the prosperity of British Columbia,” says Wright. “I am excited to have the opportunity to continue as BCIT moves into an important new phase.”

Dr. Wright’s career has spanned the academic, governmental and private sectors. He taught economics at Harvard University and the University of Saskatchewan. His government service included positions as deputy minister in the ministries of finance, forests, trade and investment, and education in the Saskatchewan and British Columbia governments.

From 1997 to 2001, Don was vice-president with Weldwood of Canada and was principal of Analytica Consulting providing advice to public and private sector clients.

He is currently Chair of Polytechnics Canada, and has been a director of a number of profit and not-for-profit boards.  He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Saskatchewan, a Masters in Economics from the University of British Columbia, and a PhD in Economics from Harvard University.

What People are Saying

“Polytechnics Canada’s Ottawa-based leadership is effectively focusing on areas of federal responsibilities. Science and Technology Minister Gary Goodyear’s excellent programs have been largely driven by Polytechnics Canada lobbying. As a national organization, Polytechnics Canada can achieve federal policies that provincial associations cannot.”
